Individuals deal with art much more than expected, not only when consciously contemplating paintings but also in their daily routine. Art is a defining component of society, culture, and the human species itself. Since we can often observe something as “artistic” without being fully realizing it, art can sometimes leave individuals intensely disliked, confused, attracted, fascinated, disrupted, and underwhelmed, and reactions can differ greatly between two individuals and two settings. Scientific literature has demonstrated that the possibility of appreciating art and being deeply involved in an aesthetic experience comprises and is emphasized by entering in empathy with the artwork itself. Recent studies have also started to show that this empathy with the work of art can also turn into empathy toward other people.
However, what is the link between empathy, aesthetic experiences, and art in psychological terms? How could the appreciation of artwork help us to be more generous and prone to help others (and vice versa)? [Extrait] |
